If left untreated, gum disease increases the risk of delivering a pre-term low birth weight baby. Many pregnant women are unaware of the damaging effect that gum disease can have on their pregnancy.

Due to hormonal changes in pregnancy, gums become more sensitive to harmful bacteria that are the cause of gum disease. Scientific studies have proven that if left untreated, pregnant women with gum disease are three times more likely than those with healthy gums to go into labour before 35 weeks, delivering low birth weight babies.
